Twenty-five years ago, Costa Rica pioneered the ecotour—and it’s only gotten better.   Before they were married, Mark and Eliza Eisendrath hiked the eastern coast of Africa. As newlyweds, they hunted caribou in the far north of Quebec. Then they had their first child, and then a second, and the traveling stopped—for a while. But finally, this past winter, with the kids now four and two, it was time to refire the travel jets and take a full-blown family vacation. Their choice? Costa Rica. Bridging the gap between the Caribbean and the Pacific in the heart of Central America, Costa…

Hotels in Costa Rica welcome children and encourage parents to bring them . Guanacaste is growing in popularity as a vacation site, but families can still experience the unspoiled beauty of Costa Rica here. Located in the northwest portion of the country, the province extends in the north to Nicaragua and includes much of the Nicoya Peninsula, referred to as the Gold Coast of Costa Rica on the Pacific Ocean. It also includes parts of Arenal and Monteverde, two popular vacation destination areas. Liberia, the capital of the province, offers a more cowboy and cattle ranch ambiance. There are a…

Most emphatically YES!!! I always highly recommend Costa Rica…In 1997 my wife, Suzan Haskins, and I were married there.. It was the first time I’d been south of the U.S. border. We found Bill Beard’s that offered wedding packages in Grano de Oro, a small boutique hotel in San Jose. It was perfect. For our honeymoon, Suzan planned something completely alien to me: a week on the road…

Recent figures have shown that the number of US tourists is increasing as well as visitors from other regions, predominantly Central and South Americans, keen to experience the Costa Rican promise of ‘Pura Vida’ (pure life). With the launch of a new route from Air Berlin, that could soon include…

Monteverde is one of the top places to visit in Costa Rica. This tour is educational and enjoyable for all ages and should be on your “must see” list. The first trapiche (sugar mill) came to Monteverde in 1948 when Mr. Higinio Santamaría (grandfather of the present owner), moved from San Ramon of Alajuela to Monteverde. The journey was done with oxen carts, to the area we know now as Santa Elena and took about 15 days,  it was then installed and started working regularly. Approximately 13 years after the arrival of the family to Monteverde, Mr. Juan Santamaría Campos (father of the…

Caribbean remains hot; Pacific action is on northern and central coast – By Todd Staley Anglers are in heaven on the Caribbean coast, while on the Pacific action is still good up north and picking up on the central coast. Angler Johnny Hoffman looks his first tarpon on a fly in the eye, at Barra del Colorado on the Caribbean coast. Courtesy of Rio Colorado Lodge It is like hearing a song you really like over and over again on the Caribbean side. The fish are chewing, and those lucky enough to make it over there will really stretch some…
