What makes Costa Rica so great for families is that each day can bring a different adventure: sighting monkeys, sloths and iguanas in the jungle, thrilling zip lining, river rafting, swimming by waterfalls, and hiking near a volcano, to name a few.

In the northwestern province of Guanacaste, Hacienda Guachipelin is a beautiful, family-friendly property. Rincon de la Vieja, the largest volcano in the country’s northwest, comprises a remote volcanic complex in the Guanacaste Range. At least nine eruptive vents are located within a 15-kilometer-wide caldera. The twin cone of 1,916 meter Santa Maria volcano, the highest peak of the Rincon complex, features an incactive crater 500 meters across.

Mineral-rich hot springs have rejuvenating and therapeutic properties treasured for centuries by people all over the world. When you visit Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin and Rincon de la Vieja, you must experience the incredible hot springs at Rio Negro. Beautiful and relaxing, the volcanic hot springs at Hacienda Guachipelin bubble up mud in the Rio Negro (“Black River”), heated naturally by the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano – the largest and most active volcano in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Guanacaste is the heart and soul of Costa Rica’s cowboy life. Vast rolling plains, towering volcanoes and mountains, and the sunny hot climate of the dry tropical forest create ideal ranching conditions. For generations, Guanacaste families have loyally worked the land and raised cattle and horses. Even though the region’s main economic activity is now tourism, the traditions of “sabanero” (cowboy) customs, folklore and music are deeply rooted.
